(9) Next, we painted the surface with white gesso, which was used to reflect the colors of the glass tesserae (small pieces of mosaic glass) back into the room.
(8) It has the same tesseral texture as the ceramic floor-tiles and is readily applied to wainscots and mantel-work. (7) The thinly painted, diaphanous rectangles, which achieve greater density of color where they overlap, function as simulacra of brushmarks or as tesserae in a mosaic.
